LONDON- After a Guardian report found fishing vessels are underreporting bycatch of whales, dolphins and porpoises, UK fisheries warn bycatch reports will increase – but due to an influx of migrants crossing the English Channel.
Multi-millionaire Alexander Buchan of the Peterhead-based Lunar Fishing Company, the single largest quota holder in the UK said, “The fishing industry can be trusted to self-report our bycatch. We will continue to honestly and accurately report all marine life accidentally caught in our nets. However, our fishermen expect an increase of bycatch due to the number of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel.”
