OAHU- Dozens of environmental activists participated in a beach cleanup Saturday along the shores of Kahuku, Hawaii. “This is the biggest, most impactful effort by the community to do something about plastic pollution Hawaii has ever seen” said a representative of environmental nonprofit Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii.
The beaches of the Hawaiian islands are subjected to large amounts of pollution from plastics in the Pacific Ocean with the fishing industry being the number one cause of plastic in the ocean. “People really care about what they’re seeing happen to our beaches and animals as a result of plastic. The amount of people who showed up for our beach cleanup and celebratory seafood dinner is evidence of that. I mean everyone brought their own reusable straw and we served our seafood with wooden forks.”
The next beach cleanup is scheduled for January 13th. Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii has a link in their instagram bio to “Be Part of the Solution – Give Today!” for those unable to participate in the next cleanup and celebratory seafood dinner.
