The Texas Department of Agriculture has requested detained child migrants be transported to staff slaughterhouses. Governor Greg Abbott announced, “With the rise of these heinous illegal border crossings, I’m proud to say the Texas Department of Agriculture has helped us find a solution for what to do with unaccompanied minors.” Under the Texas Department of Agriculture’s plan, detained child migrants will be transported to various slaughterhouses across Texas experiencing staffing shortages. Agriculture Commissioner, Sid Miller, described the program as “a win-win.” He added, “We need our slaughterhouses staffed. These kids need a roof over their heads. Obviously the state of Texas is not going to pay illegal immigrants. We can’t do that. But what we can do is offer them a safe place to live in exchange for staffing our slaughterhouses.” The program is set to go into effect January 1, 2024.
